11. Unknown Memorials

The cemetery at Djurö has a long history. It is shown as being in roughly the same place as today on a map from 1640. So the cemetery was here before the chapel was built. There was another cemetery further down in the harbour.
There are grave stones from the 18th century in this part of the churchyard. They have been moved here and placed together. What human stories lie hidden behind these simple, old-fashioned inscriptions? Who was district judge Jan Andersson, born in 1698 whose name is on a gravestone in Djurö churchyard? And who was Lena Jansdotter from Söderby, the wife of farmer Mats Matsson? Lena ended her days on 23 October 1781. On her tomb there’s a mark, maybe a symbol for the farm at Söderby? Farmer Anders Ersson from Tranvik died on 20 March 1797. Who was he? And what is known about crown pilot Nils Nilsson from Stenbro? And what is meant by the inscription “D.E.A.S. from Lerkila” born in 1776 and who died in 1781?
To get to the next stop go ROUND the church and follow the gravel path towards the church entrance. Stop number 12 is next to the fence to the right of the gate.
