Nature and Culture Trail Kyrkudden
1. Welcome to Kyrkudden
Djurhamn was a well-known anchorage for warships and merchant vessels well into the 18th century. The harbour was large and deep and protected from the wind next to a major waterway. Fleets could lie at anchor here for weeks at a time waiting for a favourable wind, for troop reinforcements or to guard the narrow entrance to the sea lane to Stockholm. The route through the Stockholm archipelago is a long one and so seafarers needed harbours where they could anchor, take on supplies, gather the crew together or wait for suitable weather. Djurhamn was a good place for this. Other popular harbours were Vaxholm, Sandhamn, Dalarö and Älvsnabben. The inhabitants of Djurö had a long way to go to get to the parish church on Värmdö, so it was natural that they built a church for themselves and for people arriving there by ship. The church was completed in 1683 and is now one of the few visible reminders of the period.Stop number 2 is by the fence opposite the bell tower. |
